Time and Existence

Hana โ€” Japanese Tutor

๐ŸŒธ

ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ (arimasu) โ€” there is (inanimate)

ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ is used to say something exists โ€” but only for non-living things like books, buildings, or keys. Japanese splits 'there is' into two verbs depending on whether the thing is alive or not. If you use ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ for a person, it sounds like you're talking about an object!
